Before we can talk about how AC Adapters work and how long they take to charge a laptop battery, we must first learn what energy is, how it works, and what is involved when working with AC Adapters. It all starts with understanding the "three E's", which are energy , electricity , and electronics .


Energy in itself can be defined as the ability to do work. As seen in the picture below, you have the potential energy to push the box up to the second story, but it requires work to do so. Once you achieve that potential energy, your kinetic energy is then used as you let go of the box and it falls.

This app allows you to do all kinds of math quickly without dealing with numbers or figuring out what button does what. I will use this tool throughout my explanations on AC Adapters.


Electricity is the lifeblood of all electronic devices. Without electricity, you would be stuck using hand powered tools or have to rely on old fashion tech like land lines! Electricity can create energy through electromagnetism, but it needs the help of batteries to start this process. The same force that makes magnets attract and repel is the same force that allows an electric current to flow . In order for electricity to flow, it needs a complete circuit, meaning there must be a path from the positive terminal of a battery to the negative.


Electrons are tiny particles with negative (-) charges. The positive (+) charge on the other hand is held by the atoms that make up an electrode . Electrons are constantly moving from atom to atom, but their movement is controlled by the battery's charge. When you see your laptop battery charging , you're actually watching this electron flow backwards through the circuit! This can be seen in the next section on how AC Adapters work!


All this science is great, but it really only matters if you are using an AC Adapter to charge your laptop battery . But before we can get to that point, we must first understand how batteries work!


A battery has three main components: the anode (+), the cathode (-), and the electrolyte. The anode is where electrons enter, which is followed by an internal chemical reaction that converts the energy into potential energy . Once this potential energy reaches 1.65 volts/cell , it allows for the release of the newly formed electrons and they flow to the cathode (-) like shown below.
